فازت صورة نادرة التقطتها مصورة تعمل أخصائية اتصالات في جامعة كاليفورنيا بجائزة First-Place Gold Feature Photo عن صورة التقطتها لنحلة في نفس لحظة اللسع تماماً.
ويظهر في الصورة انفصال جزء من أنسجة معدة النحلة عنها أثناء اللسع، وليس فقط انفصال الشوكة كما كان متوقعاً، ويرجع المتخصصون في علم الحشرات وفاة النحلة عقب اللسع لهذا الانفصال الذي لا تقوم به النحلة إلا مرة واحدة في حياتها وفي حالة دفاعية لا هجومية.
وكانت Kathy Keatley Garvey المهتمة بالحشرات قد التقطت طوال حياتها أكثر من مليون صورة للسع النحل بحسب نشرة Sacramento Bee المتخصصة في أخبار النحل والصادرة من مدينة Sacramento الأمريكية؛ كبرى مدن كاليفورنيا. إلا أن هذه الصورة تبقى الأكثر تميزاً، إذ تقول ما لم تقله جميع الصور الأخرى.
