An Amazing Feat of Engineering

If you haven’t been through the Hoover Dam in the past couple of years, then you haven’t seen the marvel of engineering that has been taking place near the Dam.  Away from the dam, a gargantuan construction effort has taken place to create a bridge for traffic in order to keep traffic away from the dam.  Referred to as the Hoover Dam Bypass Project, the vision and required engineering design are no less fantastic than that which created Hoover Dam.  As such, after having these photos passed on to me, I felt compelled to share them.  The photos do justice to what is being created there.  These may be from the Hoover Dam Bypass Project website, a terrific site for calling out the development of this fantastically inspiring effort.  If you get a chance to drive by, watch for the bridge.  At this point, it would be hard to miss.  It is truly impressive.  Enjoy.

Why Drive Up To A Theater, When You Can Float Up To It?

Earlier this month, a clutch of avid filmgoers experienced their own cinematic moment: Amidst the rocky shoreline of Yao Noi, Thailand, the group was delivered by boat to a auditorium floating in the middle of a quiet lagoon. The event was organized by Film on the Rocks Yao Noi, a new film festival, which commissioned the architect Ole Scheeren to build what he came to call the Archipelago Cinema, a large raft built out of recycled materials.

طُلب من المعماري الألماني أولي إشرين أن يصمم سينما غير تقليدية في تايلاند بمناسبة مهرجان أفلام اسمه “فيلم على الصخور”، فبنى فكرة تصميمه على الصخور بالمعنى الحرفي الكلمة , استغل إشرين الطبيعة الساحرة لتايلاند فقام ببناء السينما وسط الماء بين صخور تايلاند الخلابة، واستوحى الفكرة من جزر تايلاند المتناثرة فقام بتصميم المسرح من مجموعة أخشاب طافية، وزاد عليها جمالاً بأن تم بناء المسرح من مواد معاد تصنيعها.تقوم القوارب بنقل المشاهدين إلى مكان السينما عند موعد العرض ليستمتعوا بتجربة فريدة، فيجلس المشاهدون على مسرح يطفو فوق الماء لمشاهدة شاشة عرض طافية!
